EAGALA (Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association)
The EAGALA Model is a distinctive experiential framework designed to allow clients the latitude to discover, learn, and grow from the horse-human relationship. Known as equine-assisted psychotherapy, or equine-assisted learning, depending on the session objectives, the EAGALA Model is the global standard for professionals.
The EAGALA Model Standards for Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP)
• Team facilitation approach consisting of a Licensed Mental Health Professional (MH), qualified Equine
Specialist (ES), and the horses
• 100% on the ground (no riding)
• Solution-focused model
• Code of Ethics
The EAGALA Model is different than many other models in that it involves no riding or horsemanship. No horse experience is necessary. This ground level work enables clients to better perceive the horses' actions and reactions as they work to process and solve their life challenges. It offers clients opportunities to gain insight about themselves and receive immediate feedback from the horses. Horses respond with unique insight into exactly who we are in the moment. They are gifted reflectors of our true selves because their very survival depends on reading us right. The experience encourages clients to draw parallels to what is going on in their lives by using the experiences with the horses as metaphor to what is happening elsewhere in their lives.
